In-Depth Review: Thor Motor Coach Hurricane 2017
When it comes to luxury on the road, few names can compete with Thor Motor Coach. As the top brand for motorhomes in North America, Thor Motor Coach manufactures around 25% of the motorhomes which are purchased on the continent every year. Originally formed through a merger in 2010 between Four Winds International and Damon Motor Coach, the company is a pooling of expert talent resulting in innovative design.
Among the brand's best-known motorhomes is the Class A Hurricane. If you have a reasonably high budget but you do not want to break the bank for luxury, it is hard to find a more balanced choice than the Hurricane. The Hurricane has been around for many years, previously sold under the Four Winds name. Let's take a look at the 2017 model.
First of all, it is helpful to know that there are a number of different versions of the Thor
Motor Coach Hurricane:

Each one has a different set of floor plans. You can check out the floor plans here on the Thor Motor Coach website. What is great about all these different layouts is that they create a feel of customization. Right off the top you get to choose a design which is going to offer you the distribution of space which best fits your needs. There are a number of "Optional Items" which you can add on to further personalize your vehicle, and you can customize colors.
Thor Motor Coach Hurricane 2017 Features
If you have a chance to check out the 31S in person, you will see that it is a beautiful vehicle with gorgeous, pristine gel-coat paint and some very cool exterior design elements which would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for them. A great example is the LED accent lights in the front. Even though these details might go unnoticed by a casual onlooker, they definitely contribute to the overall feeling of luxury, and that is something nobody could miss. Side-view cameras are integrated right into the mirrors.
A rear camera also makes it safe and easy to back up. All of the Thor Motor Coach Hurricanes feature a wide panoramic window in the front which makes for amazing sightseeing while you are driving. The engine is a powerful 6.8 Tritonu00ae V10 with 6-speed automatic transmission and overdrive. You can access the engine simply by pulling up the grill in the front, so it is easy to maintain the moving parts and keep this RV running smoothly over the years to come.
Enjoy barbecuing? The Thor Motor Coach Hurricane is outfitted with a quick-connect for your barbecue, and there is even (optionally) a full exterior kitchen complete with a sink, refrigerator, countertop, and cabinets.
Stepping into the driver's seat, you will find yourself in a cushy chair which swivels and reclines. Cruise control makes driving easy and a tilt feature keeps the wheel ergonomic (a big deal if you are like me and suffer shoulder problems). Here you will find the monitor which displays the feeds from the rear and mirror cameras to help you turn and back up. A stowaway table is perfect for holding food or maps, and there is a collapsible desk for the passenger seat.
Above the front seats is a dropdown bunk system which includes a ladder. A slide-out for the sofa and dinette provides a spacious environment which is perfect for family living. The sofa can be extended into an additional cozy bed, and you will find more clever storage under the seats in the dinette. Energy-efficient LED lighting is wired throughout the RV.
You will notice plenty of luxurious accents in the kitchen including a flat-screen TV integrated into the cabinets and gorgeous woodwork. There is even a pull-out extension to the countertop if you need more room to cook. The refrigerator measures six cubic feet and gives you more than enough space to stock up your kitchen.
In the hall you will find a convenient monitoring station which lets you know how much power is left in your battery, how much freshwater you have, whether your tanks are full, and so on. You can also use the controls here to open and close your slide-outs. And what is really cool is a remote control which you can carry around with you. You can even use it standing outside the RV!
The bathroom includes a sliding glass door for the shower (which is a lifesaver in terms of keeping moisture contained - very important in any RV, where mold is a constant battle), stainless steel sink, and tons of cabinets and counter space. The bedroom is simply beautiful with a queen-size bed with padded headboard, cabinets over the top, room to walk on either side, and yet another fully-integrated flat-screen LED TV. A
Bluetooth stereo system with speakers is located right next to the bed. Underneath the TV you will find a charging dock for your devices. This room does not feel cramped in the slightest.
If you are looking for more sleeping options, check out the 34J Bunkhouse, which includes additional beds that can also convert into a sofa.
Conclusion: A Dream Home for Full-Timers
You could buy this motorhome if you were simply looking for a "home away from home" for your vacations, but it is best for full-timers who want a permanent home on the road.
There are so many great features here which solve common problems:
- Thanks to the handy monitoring/control station, you never have to guess when you need to empty your tanks.
- The design of the bathroom does a great job containing moisture and preventing mold.
- The comfort features for the driver and front-seat passenger were designed with long, frequent trips in mind.
